1. Start by Locking Down the Bolts
One of the most frustrating tasks when setting a new toilet revolves around setting the bowl onto its new bolts. It is normal for them to start slipping and tipping as you are attempting to properly align them with the toilet holes. Make sure you do not crush the wax ring with each miss.
2. Fix the Flanges
Here, you need to be careful when selecting the ring type to use. Common ring types include: ear-type ring, repair ring, 2-part repair ring, repair flange, and repair bracket. If you are not sure which is which, it will be best to call in a handyman.
3. Use Shims to Eliminate Rocking
If your toilet starts to rock when placed on a floor that is not even, be sure that it will eventually break its wax ring seal, and the end result will be uncontrolled leaking. Therefore, ensure you check whether there are wobbles as you are setting it in in place.
4. Sit On the Toilet to Ensure the Wax Ring is Squished
Having set the toilet in place, it will be important to make sure that you get to sit on it to ensure that the wax ring has been properly squished. This helps ensure that the toilet gets to settle properly on the floor. Do not apply too much pressure on the toilet when tightening the bolts and nuts. Too much pressure will call the porcelain bases to start cracking.
5. Do Not Tighten the Water Connections
